The Relationship between Empowerment and Quality of Health care among nurses in Jordanian Governmental Hospitals

This study examines the relationship between nurses’ empowerment and healthcare quality in Jordanian governmental hospitals. For the methodology, the study population entails all nurses who work in governmental hospitals in Jordan. The research applies a random stratified sample. The final sample size is expected to reach 130 participants. The sample entailed New Zarqa Governmental Hospital, AlBashier Hospital, and Prince Basma Hospital. After obtaining approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the Nursing Faculty, at Zarqa University. The online software (Google Forms) designs an electronic web-based survey containing a consent form. According to Kanter's theory, structural empowerment is measured by following components (Formal power, informal power, perceived access to the work, empowerment structures of opportunity, information, support, and resources. Psychological empowerment is measured based on Spreitzer’s 12-item scale to measure four dimensions: meaningful work, competence, autonomy, and impact. The Quality Nursing Care (QNC) scale is used to measure the quality of care. The results shows that there is a positive correlation between all dimensions of psychological empowerment and structural empowerment with the quality of care. The highest correlation is between support and quality of care, which is a key area to be developed by the hospitals' managers. The least correlation is with the resources as a limitation of the Jordanian hospitals. The highest relation is between the quality of care and the autonomy, which reflects the highest importance factor to attain between the quality of care, so the head nurses and management should focus in improving this side in the nurses. In coclustion, the study concluded the role of the empowerment at the Jordanian hospitals to improve the levels of the quality of care. Thus, the polices, traning and changes in working procedsers are needed, espically for the phucological empwerment to help in developing the level of healthcare services in Jordan.
