Study in the Department of English Language and Literature started with the opening of the Zarqa Private University in 1994, noting that the department is in continuous scientific development at all levels. There has been a noticeable change in the study plans and the quality of the subjects studied by the students, as the department in this field aimed at keeping up with the prestigious Arab and international universities, and the number of students studying in the department has increased. The Translation specialization as one of the programs of the English Language and Literature Department was established in the academic year 2007/2008 as one of the departments of the Faculty of Arts, and this specialization is considered new in universities, which helps in the development of societies in various fields.
The establishment of this department comes in line with the university’s aspirations and future plans to open new job markets for university graduates, and to meet the desires of scholars and researchers in human knowledge. Translation is an important window for exchanging civilizations and cultures between human beings, and it is an effective and even strategic means in communicating countries and nations in our time, economically, culturally and politically, especially as we live in an era of globalization that has made the universe a village with close borders and connected corners.
The scientific mission of the department is clear in its current form and is programmed and has been developed in accordance with the scientific standards in force in the corresponding departments in the reputable and prestigious universities, known for their scientific effectiveness, and high professional competence.
The scientific mission of the department extends to preparing cadres with distinct capabilities to carry out the process of translation, teaching the English language and scientific communication in most local and international fields, in addition to that the department seeks to develop curricula and keeps pace with scientific and linguistic development, using modern means, and choosing modern books and everything related to developing language teaching methods for faculty and students alike.
Curricula, vocabulary, and plans were developed to create cadres and support society to teach and communicate with the English language in different fields of life. In addition to translation in its correct scientific and practical form, by creating graduates with a high sense of citizenship that helps them build their country and society in an optimal way.
The department also has an ambitious scientific vision, namely, making cultural agreements with similar departments in well-known universities, which are known for their long experience in teaching the English language and have the potential to provide the department with scientific expertise through the exchange of visits, the exchange of journals and pamphlets, and the holding of conferences and lectures.
The department also has a plan aimed at encouraging faculty members to complete scientific research and publish it in scientific and international journals. This, undoubtedly, broadens the horizons of the department in which they work.
The department is constantly striving to create the necessary means that would increase the department’s effectiveness in the areas of development and creating multiple linguistic capabilities and skills by preparing magazines and films, expanding the linguistic laboratory, and creating and increasing the number of classrooms with data shows.
There is a clear and ambitious vision that has a rewarding and beneficial scientific outcome, which is sending top students or preparing the means for them to pursue their graduate studies, and the department stresses this project, as it would encourage students and create legitimate and fair competition, and that the university gives priority to this vital project.
As for the faculty members, they are of various scientific titles, and hold varied degrees, masters and doctoral, as they obtained them from local, Arab, and international universities, and they have high scientific competencies, and rich experience in teaching and scientific research, and undoubtedly this was reflected at the level of students. This has been recognized in Arab and international universities, and even in various fields of work. Therefore, a good number of graduates of the Department of English Language and Literature and have enrolled in prestigious universities to pursue their graduate studies, obtained a master’s and doctorate degrees, and returned to continue teaching in the department, and the university is also sending a scholarship students from the department to pursue their graduate studies. In addition, the university opened a postgraduate studies program to award a master's degree in language and literature.
The department also has scientific contacts that benefit students at the scientific level, with most of the corresponding departments in the famous Arab and international universities, through conferences, as a number of professors of the Department of English Language and Literature have delivered scientific research in these conferences, and the department carries out scientific activities through the cultural seasons that are held annually, and receive linguistic and literary research, and this determines the linguistic level of the students, as they benefit from this activity to a large extent, and from time to time the students, under the supervision of the English Language Club, hold some linguistic and literary seminars and debates, which encourage students to creativity and engage in scientific debates, as English is the language of speaking in these scientific activities. The department, and through the university's continuous support, is also constantly trying to enrich the department's library with scientific resources in all areas of language and literature so that students can read them to consolidate their scientific level, to expand their perceptions and to create scientific horizons in planning to write the research required in some scientific courses. The department has two modern linguistic laboratories, in which all subjects related to conversation, phonics, and simultaneous translation are taught, which enhances the scientific level in terms of speaking, communicating in English, and interpretation.
